Stipules
Leaf base consists small appendages on both sides are called stipules.
Leaves having stipulate are called stipulate.
Types Of Stipule -
A. According to their age -
1. Caducous
2. Deciduous
3.Persistent
1. Caducous -
When stipules detach before leaf unfold then they called caducous. eg , michelia champaca (campa).
2. Deciduous -
Theses stipules detach just after the leaf unfold. eg , cassia , dilenia etc.
3. Persistent -
These stipules remain attach throughout the life of leaf. eg , rose and china rose.
B. According to their structure and position
1. Free lateral stipule -
Two free stipules occurs on both sides of leaf base. eg , china rose.
2. Adnate Stipule -
These are two lateral attached stipule with petiole. eg , rose (rosa indica).
3. Ttendrillar Stiuple -
These are thin , wiry , structure which helps in climbing called tendrills. eg , smilax.
4. Spiny Stipule -
Stipules are modified into spines. Which may be long and curved , they perform the function of protection. eg , touch-me-not (Mimosa pudica) , Plum (Zizyphus).
