Function of Stem 



Bears leaves and hold them in a position so  to provide maximum sunlight.

Stem conduct organic food from the leaves to root and storage organ.

It conducts a water and mineral nutrients from the roots to leaves flowers and fruits.

Stem bears flowers in such a position so that it is facilitated pollination and fertilization.

The stem provide support for stability of plant.




It is also useful for food storage example sugarcane and potato.

It is also useful for food synthesis example opunsia and ruscus.

It is also useful for perennation.

Also useful for vegetative propagation example, sugarcane ,Tuber of potato.

Also useful for protection from grazing. Eg, lemon , bel.


Bud -


It is compact immature young suit having undeveloped internodes because of which the lives becomes overlapped and the bud Aquarius a condenser structure.


  •  largest and well developed bud is cabbage ( brassica oleracea )


Types of bud -


1. Apical bud / terminal

2. Lateral bud

3. Adventitious Bud

1. Apical Bud / Terminal Bud -

These birds are present at the apex of main stem and help to increase length of plant . Eg , cabbage

2. Lateral Bud -

It develops on stem branches at any site.

Depending upon their place of occurrence it is of two types

(A) Axillary Bud -

It formed in the axis of leaf examples and sun flower , rose etc.

(B) Acessory Bud -

It occurs on lateral side of axillary bud. Eg , brinjal , Chilli etc.

3. Adventitious Bud -

It occurs at different places other than apicla or lateral.  Eg , bryophyllum (from leaves) , jpomea batata ( sweet potato ) from roots etc.
