Modification Of Tap Root
Roots are modified to perform an specific function.
Modification Of Tap Root
(a) Storage Root -
1. Canival
2. Fusiform
3. Tuberous
4. Napiform
(b) Respiratory Root / Pneumatophoers
(c) Nodulated Root
(a) Storage Root -
These roots are modified to store food. for food storage , it becomes swollen and a spefic shape is formed.
It Is Of Four Types -
1. Conical - This root become cone shaped which is swollen at the base and gradually tapers towards the apex. eg , carrot ( daucus carrota ).
2. Fusiform - The middile part of this root becomes thick and swollen and marrow towards base and spex give a shape of spindle eg ,raddish (rappanus sativus).
3. Tuberous - Food is stored in any position of root so irregular shape is formed. eg , parwal
( trichosanthus ) 40' clock plant ( mirabilish jalapa ).
4. Napiform - Root is morely globular in shape the basal portion of root is much swollen which suddenly turniph ( brassica napus ) , sugarbeet ( beta vulgares ).
(b) Respiratory root / Pneumatophores -
These roots are found in plants which grow in salene , swamphs or mangrooves.
The lateral branches of roots grows upward showing negative geotropism.
These upward branches are called minute pores at its apex that is called pneumathodes.
These pneumathodes are useful for gaseous exchange for respiration. eg , Rhizophora , Heritiera.
NOTE - This type of plants mostly found in sunderbans of west bengal.
(c) Nodulated Root / Tubercualte Root -
Plants of leguminosae family are characterised by presence of nodules on branches of roots in which nitrogen N2 fixing bacteria are present .
This is example of mutalistic symbiosis.
eg , groundnut , peanut etc.
